How do multi-sport athlete supporting coaches co-exist in a specialized world?

As I was reading "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, an excerpt from his book stood out to me. He said, "Too much emphasis in the off-season can, in my opinion, deprive the players of many worthwhile activities, and may also cause some to grow stale during your season".

So how do us multi-sport athlete supporters deal with the pressure and high demand of year round opportunities for an individual sport? How do we deal with the comments of "not having enough off season opportunities". In other terms, how do we keep up with the Joneses? And yet, one of the most successful coaches to this day, a legend, and a true sport icon understood the importance of other "worthwhile activities" and access to them.

So why are some of your athletes within your team(s) not performing to their ability? Why are they having conflict with other teammates? Why do they seem injury prone? Well.. I think your answer is above. Specialization and lack of other "worthwhile activities" is causing "some to grow stale".

And as for those who are multi-sport supporters. Stay true to you, and own your view point. Because regardless of the trends in society, the data still supports you.

Mr. John Wooden, you were on to something sir. Knowledge and insight needed more now than ever.
